Manifesto

An ambitious mission of 7 Spanish cities seeking a systemic and complete transformation of the urban environment for its decarbonization and the improvement of its energy efficiency.

The problem:

In Spain, buildings are responsible for 40% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This is because the energy needed for heating, cooling and electricity comes mostly from fossil sources that pollute the air.

Our Solutions:

  • Energy Rehabilitation: Improving the energy efficiency of buildings reduces the amount of energy required and, therefore, GHG emissions. If we also use renewable energy sources, emissions can be reduced to almost zero.
  • Use of Local Biomaterials: Use local biological materials, such as wood, for rehabilitation. These materials are reusable, recyclable and help reduce CO2 in the atmosphere.

Benefits for you:

  1. Energy Bill Savings: By reducing the need for heating and cooling, your energy bills will be lower.
  2. Revaluation of your home: By improving and updating the building, your home will increase in value.
  3. Community Empowerment: Energy communities improve relationships and trust between neighbors.
  4. Better Future for the New Generations: We leave a cleaner planet and more efficient buildings for our children and grandchildren.
  5. Building Life Extension: Improvements and upgrades that ensure the building lasts longer.
  6. Improved Extreme Weather Performance: Improved insulation to maintain stable indoor temperatures during extreme heat or cold spells.

Why Do We Need Your Support?

We need your support to carry out several actions:

1. Anonymous Commitment: Your support will be reflected on our website anonymously to show that citizens are aware of this issue.

Report to the European Commission: Your input will form part of a report that will seek further European policy support and funding.

3. Report to the Ministry of Ecological Transition: It will help to get more state support and funding for energy rehabilitation.

Our Objective:

Europe has funds until 2027 for decarbonization projects. We need to extend this support to achieve decarbonization by 2050. URBANEW participating cities are committed to achieving this goal by 2030.

What We Ask:

  1. Political Commitment: We call on political representatives to continue to support the ecological and energy transition with funds and grants beyond 2027.
  2. Support for Decarbonization: We call for express support for the decarbonization of the built environment through building rehabilitation and urban regeneration in a rapid, fair and inclusive manner.
